System 76 are great, but I'd wipe the entire drives and replace POP with a better linux OS myself.

I just ordered a new Dell Laptop with Windows 10. I wanted a System 76 but could not afford one of their systems. They are sleek and beautiful. And ready to go with linux installed. No muss, no fuss. But, I am looking forward to wiping out the Windows 10 and installing linux mint when it arrives. That will be very satisfying. After support for Windows 7 goes away, Microsoft Windows will no longer reside in my home on any of my pc's...

@gilkesisking I had heard just exactly that. So I went to the Dell web site and looked at the laptops. The only options for OS were Windows 10 and Chrome. I could have called but didn't.

You do realise that Dell sell Linux Laptops? and if you pick up a new release quickly they're usually about 100 cheaper because no Windows Tax... overpaid to support Miscroshite. ( You can now also buy Thinkpads with Linux along with a few other brands )

"Compile your own kernel"? "Hunt down repos"?
Jesus tapdancing christ what year is it??

If you think you still have to compile your own kernel for any ubuntu based distro, then please stop making videos about Linux. You're obviously not prepared for it. To my knowledge, Gentoo is the only distro where you have to do this. This misinformation is exactly why so many windows users have the completely wrong idea about Linux. Please stop spreading 2004 Linux memes. You're only creating more work for us to undo.

@BlackBallBouncer Okay first, IF it's a joke, then why do so many people treat it like it's a fact? Do you know how often I tell random people, "No, you don't have to compile your own kernel. No, you don't have to compile all of the software from scratch. No, Linux isn't an illegal OS." If it's a joke, then all of the people who tell the joke don't get the joke themselves.

Second, he's obviously not joking. At 2:05 he says he doesn't use Linux. There's no way to misinterpret that.

At 2:22, he puts a white censor box over his username and mountable file systems and a brown box at the top to hide his username again. He is obviously new to Linux, doesn't understand it's security, and doesn't know if it's safe to show his username to the public. Unless his username was something offensive, this was clearly just paranoia about something he doesn't understand.

At 2:35 he mispronounces Ubuntu. He also acts like the concept behind PopShop is something new to Linux. It's not. We've had driver managers and software centers for over a decade now. Where do you think apple and google got the idea from?

At 4:40 he says video editing isn't very good right now for Linux. He says this because he doesn't yet understand Linux software and how you don't have to become attached to one specific tool. He was also comparing ports of consumer video editors and he doesn't know about Linux's own video editing tools and libraries windows users would never know about. And they're extremely powerful. I wrote a program myself with them that trimmed a 12 hour video clip down to 9 hours, in under 10 seconds. This is unthinkable on windows.

His general approach to and a lot of what he was saying about Linux resonates as someone who hasn't even begun to shake off all of the bad habits windows teaches. He may know a lot about a great many number of topics, but Linux isn't one of them and he shouldn't be making Linux videos until he learns more about it first.

Calm down, it's just a meme. I personally just setup a Pop!_Os dual boot with my windows the other day, and am loving it so far. Was extremely easy. I think he was just saying it as a joke

Huh. So, as the design is OS, there is nothing stopping anyone from creating a 3d-printable base that the computer can sit on which incorporates a filter and noise suppression of some sort. Neat!

Where the hell have you been for the last 20 years. There have been Linux Vendors making prebuild and installed desktop and laptop Linux systems for a long time, and including support contracts for those systems. What are you on about? I have purchased Linux systems for some of my customers as fare 18 years ago.

There is a lot of dislikes about the 'seizure inducing' B-Roll footage. I think the concept of it was simple and brilliant, it was aesthetically great. Probably just needed a little less strobe type footage.

Listening to you speak about Linux in the 1st few minutes you can definitely tell you are not familiar with anything Linux from the last 3+ years. I cringed when you start talking about having to compile kernels or finding the necessary repos.

I agree. These days Linux will install and run just as simply and reliably for most users as either Windows of MacOS. The most likely fail case would be wifi cards, arising from selecting one of those distros that requires you to add a repo for "non-free" drivers. Even a small amount of research should help you avoid this problem. Since Windows users sometimes have to spend a lot of time finding and installing drivers, it' would be disingenuous to suggest that's a "Linux problem".

When i install ubuntu i have choice to not encrypt my disc.

                                                                  • gilkesisking

Disc encryption is done by default during the PopOS install. Its not "enforced", if you don't want that ( say you're a storing game files on the same disk ) then you can select the advanced install option and set it up how you want, with or without encryption.
